Alice Temperley shows her Spring/Summer collection as digital installation

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Alice Temperley decided once again to forgo the catwalk at London Fashion Week and instead showed her newest collection via a “travelling circus” presentation and digital installation at London’s hip hangout, Sketch.  Hear the designer talking about her collection (inspired by circuses of the 1920s and 30s) in the video above, plus see the actual collection itself.  Then view the film on the official Temperley London website and of course, you can always…

How to wear: A leather skirt this autumn/winter

Kristin Cavallari shows how to work a leather skirt[Image: Splash News]

This autumn/winter, fashion is continuing to play it tough, and part of that involves mixing feminine fabrics like lace and sheer chiffon with “harder” materials such as leather, suede and velvet.  Leather has become more and more prominent in recent seasons, and where biker jackets and leather trousers were once the exclusive domain of Hell’s Angels and Iggy Pop, they are now fairly standard wear for day or evening!  How to take this leather look to the next level then?  Well, this season it is all about the skirt – and we’ve seen a fair few sent down the catwalks as well as cropping up on many celebrities in recent times.

Kristin Cavallari, best known for her stint on teen reality show Laguna Beach and who is now starting a new season on The Hills, gives us the perfect example of how best to wear one.  She pairs her high-waisted pencil skirt with a feminine, lacy top (also consider sheer fabrics in light, pretty colours) to balance everything out.  Keep accessories minimal (go for neutral tones and metallics over black or darker accessories) and keep makeup and hair simple and pretty.

Try these three leather skirts on for size:

Lover Angels zip leather skirt, £375 from Net-a-Porter
Dorothy Perkins black zip skirt, £25 from Dorothy Perkins
Warehouse  leather panelled mini skirt, £65 from Warehouse

This year, Dolce & Gabbana went all out to prove they are down with the world of online – from setting up bloggers BryanBoy, Garance Dore, Tommy Ton of Jak&Jil and The Sartorialist‘s Scott Schuman in the front-row complete with their own tables and laptops, to hosting an online press conference where Domenico and Stefano talk inspiration and this season’s collection ahead of its showing at Milan Fashion Week.  D&G customers are increasingly researching and purchasing online and it’s nice to hear that the lads are taking note of this and adjusting their coverage accordingly – that just means more good stuff for us!

Never one to blend in with the crowd, Fearne Cotton loves experimenting with her look and part of that is having fun with colour.  If you saw these green jeans sitting on the shelf in-store, you might feel slightly intimidated by their… well, green-ness.  How do you wear such a bold colour, when we are so used to wearing denim in shades of indigo, black and grey?  Fearne shows that it is indeed possible, and pairs hers with a black tee and blazer and some very cool patent ankle boots.  The final rock-chick touch?  A pair of Wayfarer sunnies, a pretty charm necklace and a Mulberry bag slung casually over her arm – a great look for livening up a grey autumn day.

Sonia Rykiel for H&M – let the heart palpitations begin!

sonia_rykiel_h&m

The biggest news in the fashion world this week (and let’s face it, it may only be Monday, but it will most likely still be our highlight come Friday) is that high street store H&M have announced their next designer collaboration – this time, with Sonia Rykiel.

H&M are on a roll when it comes to locking in fashion’s best names – the famed French fashion designer follows in the footsteps of Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Matthew Williamson and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, who have all designed collections for the Swedish high street chain.

The collaboration will apparently come in two parts – the first collection consists of lingerie and will launch on December 5, while the second collection will include knitwear and accessories, and will available in store next February.

If you can’t wait until then to get your hands on some Rykiel goodness, then check out the Sonia Rykiel and Sonia by Sonia Rykiel collections here.

Whitney Port shows us how to wear purple – this season’s hottest shade

If you’ve been reading all about how purple is the colour to be seen in this season, but are still feeling a bit apprehensive about wearing it, then Whitney Port is here to show us all how to do it right.

Here, she teams a deep plum shade with a textured silver-grey skirt to perfection, keeping her accessories to a minimum and her makeup pretty and peachy.  Obviously, not everyone has never-ending legs like dear Whits to pull off a mini as short as this one (goshdarnit!), so we have chosen a skirt which is still nice and fitting (to balance out the voluminous blouse) but with a bit more length.
